What is the Government Traineeship Program?

The Government Traineeship Program is an employment-based training initiative that provides young people with an opportunity to undertake a Government qualification, develop public administration skills and competencies through a Government Traineeship.

How many trainees will be part of this Program?

There is no limit to the number of trainees a Public Sector agency can employ. It is envisaged that around 100 young people will undertake a traineeship through the program in 2012 in the metropolitan area. PSC plans to expand the number of Government traineeships in the Sector.

Is funding available from the Department of Training and Workforce Development to deliver Government Traineeships?

Certificate II, III and IV in Government are funded traineeships.

How will PSC promote Government Traineeships to WA Public Sector agencies?

PSC will be promoting Government Traineeships to all Public Sector agencies through a targeted marketing campaign that consists of information sessions, publications and promotional materials.

How will Public Sector agencies identify Registered Training Organisations that deliver Government qualifications?

PSC will provide a list of Registered Training Organisations that deliver Government qualifications. To ensure currency of this list, PSC encourages Registered Training Organisations to contact youth@psc.wa.gov.au with any updates to their scope of registration. Alternatively, Public Sector agencies can also search training.gov.au for Registered Training Organisations.

What Public Sector specific resources are available to develop learning materials for Government qualifications?

PSC has developed the VET Information for Training Providers webpage where RTO’s can download a range of Public Sector specific resources to develop learning materials. Government Skills Australia has launched the QC Builder that provides detailed information about suitable competency, training and qualification options for the Public Sector.

What assistance is PSC providing to Public Sector trainee supervisors on the changes?

PSC is looking at developing the skills of trainee supervisors that will increase awareness of the VET framework and the way in which Traineeships operate.

Can units of competencies from other training packages be used within the Government qualification undertaken by a trainee?

While PSC supports the flexible use of Training Packages, it is recommended to ensure consistency across all Government Traineeships that the majority of elective units are selected from the Public Sector Training Package. However, you can assist Public Sector agencies to choose the most appropriate elective units.

Are there any other opportunities to deliver Government qualifications in the WA Public Sector apart from traineeships?

Yes, the Public Administration Industry Working Group aims to increase awareness and commitment by Public Sector agencies to utilise the Public Sector Training Package as a means of meeting public administration workforce development needs. Opportunities will be advertised on Tenders WA.
