Enhancing the public sector workforce
Public Sector Commission and the Department of Commerce
Agency-level initiatives to support this sector-wide priority area may be derived from Strategic Directions for the Public Sector Workforce 2009-2014 and should focus on one or more of the following:
- Attraction, retention and workforce development initiatives that build the capacity of the Metropolitan and Regional public sector, including addressing the under-representation of identified Equal Opportunity groups across all levels of the public sector workforce.
- Developing and actively supporting cross-sector mobility and leadership development programs that build policy and management capabilities and promote a 'one sector' perspective.
- Improving workforce planning systems and practices, including undertaking skills gap analysis and workforce forecasting.
- Implementing strategies and developing management systems to improve wellbeing, safety, health, and injury management outcomes.
Strategic Directions for the Public Sector Workforce 2009-2014 outlines key initiatives for central and line agencies to implement. This and other workforce planning publications and resources are available in the Workforce Planning Resources section.
Exemplar strategies for improving occupational safety, health and injury management systems, policies and practices are referenced in Appendices six and seven of the Code of Practice for Occupational Safety and Health in the Public Sector (external website), with additional information available online at Public Sector Safety (external website), maintained by the Department of Commerce.
